This October Lancaster Art Vault presents The Biospheres Series [and other editorial surrealism] by Resident Artist Peter Stevenson, bringing together a selection of paintings that explore landscape, place, imagination, and the unexpected ways these ideas can intersect.

A fine artist and illustrator, Stevenson developed his distinctive style of “editorial surrealism” through a career spanning fine art, illustration, and commercial work. His work has appeared in publications and projects for clients including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Crayola, AT&T, and Citibank, earning numerous regional and national awards along the way.

The Biospheres series, which Stevenson describes as a thematic exploration of landscape and atmosphere, grew from his return to the Lancaster area and his renewed interest in the region’s farmland, architecture, and natural surroundings. The series first premiered in Lancaster in 2018 and has continued to evolve as Stevenson re-examines familiar landscapes through a more imaginative lens.

Alongside the Biospheres paintings, this exhibition features examples of Stevenson’s editorial surrealism—works that blend recognizable imagery with unexpected scale, perspective, and visual relationships. The result is a body of work that is at once familiar and yet unexpected, inviting viewers to look at the landscape around them in a new way.

Now based in Lancaster, Stevenson brings a career shaped by both fine art and illustration back to the region that influenced his earliest artistic experiences.
