“Mid-Century Mod and Beyond” by Resident Artist Ann Benton Yeager

This exhibition brings to life a creative pull I have carried for years – a long-held desire to step fully into the bold color, crisp geometry and the clarity of post-expressionist modern design. These works embrace the sharp lines and confident palettes that have always felt like home to me, where form becomes rhythm and color becomes intention.

On the front wall, the viewer meets my devotion to mid-century modern: clean, smooth shapes, balanced compositions, and the quiet radiant optimism of that era. Each piece feels like a small architectural poem – geometry arranged with care, color chosen with conviction.

On the side wall, the “beyond” unfolds – works that loosen, wander and stretch the imagination into something more intuitive and personal. Here the geometry softens, the palette deepens and the forms begin to breathe in new ways, as if stepping into their own future.

Together, these paintings form a conversation between past and possibility; a celebration of the mid-century modern language I love, and the path that extends beyond it, reaching toward what comes next.

Ann Benton Yeager is a native of Lancaster County, and more specifically, hails from a small college town named Millersville. Ann is representative of a lineage of very accomplished artists, including her Great, Great Uncle, Thomas Hart Benton (an American Regionalist Painter 1889-1975). Benton taught and mentored Jackson Pollock (an American Abstract Expressionist 1912-1956). To add to her credentials, Ann has been internationally published in the 2016 International Contemporary Artists, Volume XI, publication. She also won the Readers’ Choice Award for Best Artist for the “Simply the Best” contest in Harrisburg Magazine in 2021. Ann has won numerous awards at juried exhibitions in the local area. Ann is an abstract, contemporary artist who specializes in acrylic mixed media, cold wax and oil and acrylic pouring. Ann also works heavily in alcohol inks and dabbles in watercolor. She enjoys adding serious texture to her works by using unusual materials to add interest to the canvas. Ann believes abstract art is endless in its possibilities and infinite in design. Recently Ann has embraced impressionistic landscapes in cold wax and oil that continue to pique her curiosity.

Ann also teaches art classes and private lessons. She absolutely loves sharing her knowledge with others who have the same passion or simply want to try something new. She consistently attends professional art classes and workshops up and down the East Coast of the United States to increase her expertise in various art mediums, while also learning new mediums. Some of her artistic influences are many of the modern and post-modern expressionistic artists of the 60’s and 70’s, primarily Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Jane Plum and Mark Rothko.

Ann has exhibited numerous juried shows, cultural centers and galleries, as well as solo shows, local community shows and art galleries. I have won several awards within the local fine art groups. She is an artist-in-residency at The Millworks, 340 Verbeke Street, Harrisburg, PA. Feel free to stop by Studio 103 to meet her and see her works in person. Ann hopes you find her art fun, interesting and thought-provoking.
